Niko Pirosmani, a self-taught Georgian painter, produced this work during the final years of his life. He frequently utilised oilcloth as his primary surface, a material readily available in the taverns and shops of Tbilisi where he lived and worked. This choice of medium contributes to the distinct, matte finish and the specific way the paint sits upon the surface, often leaving sections of the black oilcloth exposed to define outlines or shadows.

The composition is direct and unadorned. A woman sits on a small stool, positioned in profile against the massive, solid form of a cow. Pirosmani employs a flattened perspective, typical of his approach to figure and animal studies. The cow occupies the majority of the frame, its scale suggesting a monumental presence that dwarfs the human figure. The woman wears a simple headscarf and apron, her posture focused entirely on the task at hand.

Pirosmani often painted subjects from rural Georgian life, drawing upon his observations of the countryside and the people he encountered. His style is characterised by a lack of traditional academic training, which manifests in the simplified anatomy and the deliberate, almost sculptural treatment of his subjects. The colour palette is restrained, relying on earthy browns, deep blacks, and muted blues to create a sense of quietude. There is no attempt to create atmospheric depth or complex lighting effects. Instead, the focus remains on the clarity of the forms and the relationship between the worker and the animal. This work captures a moment of daily labour, rendered with a sincerity that avoids sentimentality. The starkness of the background ensures that the viewer's attention remains fixed on the interaction between the woman and the cow, reflecting the artist's ability to elevate everyday scenes into singular, iconic images.
