Description
A refined lithographic reproduction by Franz Hanfstaengl, capturing a seventeenth-century portrait originally painted by Bartholomeus van der Helst.
This lithographic reproduction by Franz Hanfstaengl captures a formal portrait originally painted by the Dutch Golden Age master Bartholomeus van der Helst. Hanfstaengl, a German lithographer and photographer, operated a successful workshop in Munich that specialised in reproducing works from the Royal Gallery in Dresden. His technical skill in lithography allowed for the translation of oil painting textures into a monochromatic medium, preserving the tonal range of the original composition.
The portrait depicts a woman seated beside a young child, both dressed in the austere, refined fashion of the seventeenth century. The woman wears a dark, structured gown with a prominent white ruff collar, her hand resting upon a book placed on a table. Beside her, the child stands, holding a small hat, their gaze directed toward the viewer. The composition relies on a balanced arrangement of figures against a draped background, typical of Dutch portraiture from the period. The lighting is controlled, creating soft transitions across the faces and the folds of the fabric.
Hanfstaengl's work reflects the nineteenth-century interest in documenting and disseminating European masterworks through high-quality printmaking. By translating the painterly qualities of Van der Helst into lithographic stone, he provided access to art historical subjects for a wider audience. The print maintains the gravity and composure of the original painting, offering a clear view of the historical costume and the formal portrait conventions of the Dutch Republic. This piece serves as an example of the intersection between nineteenth-century print technology and the preservation of earlier artistic traditions.
