Jean-Jacques de Boissieu was a French artist from Lyon, recognised for his technical mastery of etching. This work, dated 1798, demonstrates his ability to render the textures of nature through precise line work and tonal variation. The scene depicts a group of labourers engaged in the physical task of felling a large, gnarled tree. The composition is balanced, with the heavy, textured trunks of the foreground trees providing a frame for the activity occurring in the middle ground.

Boissieu often drew inspiration from the Dutch masters of the seventeenth century, particularly in his approach to rural subjects and the treatment of light. The etching process allows for a range of grey tones, from the deep shadows within the bark of the trees to the lighter, more open areas of the forest floor. The figures are integrated into the environment, their postures reflecting the exertion required for their work.
