Heinrich Hoerle, a central figure in the Cologne progressive movement, produced this self-portrait in 1931. The work reflects the aesthetic concerns of the New Objectivity movement, which emerged in Germany during the Weimar Republic. Hoerle employs a rigid, geometric approach to the human form, reducing the face to a series of calculated, symmetrical planes. The composition is bisected, creating a stark contrast between the industrial elements on the left and the organic, stylised trees on the right.
