Description
A classic ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsukawa Shun'ei, portraying the sumo wrestler Onogawa with characteristic focus on individual form and presence.
This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shun'ei depicts the sumo wrestler Onogawa Kisaburo. Shun'ei was a student of Katsukawa Shunsho and became known for his focus on the physical presence of his subjects. He moved away from the stylised, generic faces common in earlier ukiyo-e, opting instead for more individualised features. This portrait captures the wrestler in a standing pose, wearing a ceremonial kesho-mawashi apron. The composition is stark, placing the figure against a plain background to draw attention to his physical stature and the specific details of his attire.
The artist uses a clean, confident line to define the contours of the wrestler's body. The shading is minimal, relying on the strength of the outline to convey mass and volume. The colour palette is restrained, using soft earth tones and muted yellows to complement the paper ground. This approach reflects the aesthetic preferences of the late eighteenth-century Edo period, where the focus shifted toward the personalities of famous figures within the sumo world. The print includes the wrestler's name written in kanji in the upper left corner, a common feature in actor and athlete portraits of the era. The seal of the artist is visible near the bottom left, confirming the authorship of the Katsukawa school. This work provides a clear example of the shift toward realism in Japanese printmaking during this period, prioritising the character of the individual over decorative excess.
