Description
A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsukawa Shun'ei, portraying the celebrated sumo wrestler Tanikaze Kajinosuke with bold, clean lines.
This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shun'ei depicts the legendary sumo wrestler Tanikaze Kajinosuke. Shun'ei, a pupil of Katsukawa Shunsho, became known for his yakusha-e (actor prints) and musha-e (warrior prints). His approach to portraiture often involved a focus on the physical presence of the subject, stripping away unnecessary background elements to place the viewer in direct contact with the figure.
Tanikaze is shown here in a characteristic stance, wearing the ceremonial kesho-mawashi apron. The artist employs a clean, calligraphic line to define the wrestler's massive frame, emphasising the weight and power associated with the sport. The composition is stark, relying on the contrast between the bold outlines of the figure and the subtle, muted tones of the apron. The kanji characters for Tanikaze appear in the upper right, identifying the subject clearly.
Shun'ei's work during this period reflects the broader interest in celebrity culture within Edo-period Japan. Sumo wrestlers were popular icons, and prints of this nature functioned as collectible portraits for fans. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the Katsukawa school, where the economy of line serves to convey character and physical stature without the need for complex shading or perspective. The paper retains a natural, aged quality, typical of authentic woodblock impressions from the late eighteenth century. This piece offers a clear view into the aesthetic priorities of the Ukiyo-e tradition, where the focus remains on the graphic clarity of the subject.
