Description
A refined woodblock print from the Shijō school, featuring a figure in traditional attire alongside a delicate pine tree.
This print originates from the Yuseiro's Picture Album, a collection associated with the artist Nishiyama Hōen. Hōen was a prominent figure of the Shijō school in Osaka, known for his refined approach to traditional Japanese subjects. The composition displays a figure in formal attire, captured in a moment of quiet observation. The subject wears a dark, patterned outer garment over lighter trousers, holding a folding fan. The figure is depicted in profile, facing away from the viewer, which adds a sense of narrative mystery to the scene.
To the left, a small pine tree is rendered with delicate, calligraphic brushwork, typical of the Shijō school's emphasis on natural observation and economy of line. The background remains largely empty, allowing the focus to rest entirely on the figure and the botanical element. The use of colour is restrained, relying on soft tones to define the garments and the pine needles. The print includes traditional Japanese calligraphy and red seal marks, which provide historical context and authenticity to the work.
Nishiyama Hōen was a student of Ueda Kōchō and later became a significant teacher himself, influencing the artistic output of the Osaka region during the late Edo period. His work often balances the technical precision of the Kano school with the more fluid, expressive qualities of the Shijō style. This piece is an example of the high-quality woodblock printing techniques employed during the mid-nineteenth century, where subtle gradients and precise line work were essential to the aesthetic. The print offers a glimpse into the cultural life and fashion of the period, presented with the characteristic restraint and balance of Japanese printmaking.
