As a member of the prolific Sadeler family of engravers, Johann was instrumental in the dissemination of Mannerist imagery across Europe. This work originates from a series illustrating the twelve sons of Jacob, a common subject in late sixteenth-century print culture.

The composition is divided into two distinct panels. On the left, Zabulon is shown as a mariner, standing beside an anchor with a ship visible in the background. His attire, including a red cap and blue trousers, reflects the period's interpretation of ancient dress. On the right, Issachar is portrayed as a labourer, accompanied by a donkey laden with goods and holding a shovel. The figures are rendered with the elongated proportions and expressive poses characteristic of the Mannerist style. The background settings provide a narrative context, contrasting the maritime life of Zabulon with the agricultural existence of Issachar.
