Reinier Nooms, often known by his nickname Zeeman (the seaman), produced this etching during the Dutch Golden Age. His work reflects a deep familiarity with maritime life, gained through his own experiences as a sailor. This composition depicts the aftermath of a maritime disaster, where the remnants of a vessel lie scattered upon a rocky shore.

The scene is constructed with precise, rhythmic hatching that defines the texture of the jagged cliffs and the turbulent sky. Nooms employs a clear distinction between the foreground figures, who survey the wreckage, and the distant ships that remain afloat on the horizon.
