Lucebert, born Lubertus Jacobus Swaanswijk, was a central figure in the Dutch post-war art scene. As a poet and painter, he was closely associated with the CoBrA movement, which prioritised spontaneous expression and a rejection of traditional aesthetic constraints. His work often features distorted, grotesque figures that challenge conventional notions of beauty.

In this piece, titled Zeemeermin (Mermaid), the artist employs a raw, gestural style. The figure is rendered with heavy, confident ink strokes that define the contours of the body and the chair. The wash application provides subtle tonal variation, adding depth to the otherwise stark, monochromatic composition. The subject sits in a rigid, almost uncomfortable posture, with exaggerated features that lean into caricature. The line quality is deliberately unrefined, reflecting the artist's interest in the immediacy of the creative act.

Lucebert's approach to the human form is rarely literal. Instead, he uses the figure as a vessel for psychological tension.
