Description

A detailed 1648 etching by Pieter Nolpe documenting the allegorical triumphal arches erected in Amsterdam to celebrate the Peace of Münster.

This etching by Pieter Nolpe documents the elaborate allegorical displays erected on the Dam in Amsterdam to celebrate the Peace of Münster in 1648. This treaty marked the end of the Eighty Years' War between the Dutch Republic and Spain. The print captures the temporary triumphal arches and stages constructed for the festivities, which were designed to communicate complex political and moral messages to the public.

The composition is divided into three distinct architectural sections, each housing a tableau vivant. These scenes utilise classical mythology and historical figures to represent the virtues of peace, governance, and the prosperity of the Dutch state. The central arch features the Latin inscription 'Concordia res parvae crescunt' (Unity makes small things grow), a motto reflecting the Republic's collective strength. The surrounding text provides a detailed explanation of the symbolism, identifying figures such as Amphion and Augustus, who are used to draw parallels between ancient history and the contemporary leadership of the House of Orange.

Nolpe, a skilled engraver and print publisher based in Amsterdam, produced this work to serve as a visual record of the ephemeral architecture that transformed the city centre during the celebrations. The precision of the line work allows for a clear reading of the architectural details, from the pediments and columns to the heraldic shields of Amsterdam. The inclusion of descriptive text at the base of the print functions as a guide for the viewer, ensuring the allegorical intent of the displays remained accessible. This print offers a window into the intersection of public spectacle, political propaganda, and civic pride in the seventeenth-century Netherlands, providing a record of how the Dutch Republic articulated its identity following the formal recognition of its independence.
