This engraving by Johann Sadeler I, after a design by Maerten de Vos, depicts the hermit Zoerarde in a state of ascetic contemplation. The composition is characteristic of the Northern Mannerist style, where the figure of the saint is integrated into a dense, almost claustrophobic woodland setting. Zoerarde is shown seated within the hollow of a large, gnarled tree, his posture suggesting deep meditation or prayer. A halo of spikes radiates from behind his head, a visual device that contrasts with the naturalistic rendering of the surrounding forest.

The print is rich in symbolic detail. A metal crown of thorns hangs above the hermit, while chains are visible at his feet, referencing his self-imposed penance. A book lies open on his lap, and simple objects such as a cup and nuts are placed on the ground, signifying his rejection of worldly comforts. The surrounding trees are rendered with precise, rhythmic lines, creating a sense of texture in the bark and foliage that is typical of Sadeler's technical proficiency as an engraver.

Maerten de Vos, a prolific Antwerp artist, provided the original drawing for this work. The collaboration between de Vos and the Sadeler family was common during this period, resulting in numerous prints that circulated religious and moralising themes across Europe. The Latin inscription at the base provides a moral commentary on the scene, questioning the nature of vigilance and sleep in the context of spiritual struggle. This print serves as a clear example of the late sixteenth-century interest in eremitic life, where the isolation of the wilderness provided a setting for the examination of faith and human frailty. The fine cross-hatching and varied line weights demonstrate the high level of craftsmanship expected from the Sadeler workshop during their time in Munich.
