Albert de Belleroche

Albert de Belleroche was a British-born painter who spent much of his life in Paris. He was a close friend of John Singer Sargent. The two artists shared a studio for many years. Despite his aristocratic background as a count, Belleroche dedicated his life to the technical aspects of printmaking. He often worked with his own lithographic press to maintain total control over his output.

Biography

His work focuses on the private moments of women in Belle Époque interiors. He used a muted palette of greys and dark earth tones. His technique relies on suggestive brushwork and charcoal-like textures. Pieces such as The Necklace and Marthe with a Harp capture light on fabric and skin. He avoided the bright colours of his Impressionist contemporaries, preferring a more atmospheric aesthetic.

Modern collectors value Belleroche for his quiet, observational style. His prints offer a sense of intimacy that fits well in domestic spaces. The sketches of figures like Babette or the Young Lady Seated feel immediate and personal. His work provides a connection to the late nineteenth-century Parisian art scene without being overly formal. These prints suit interiors that require a touch of historical character and subtle tonal contrast.
