André Racz

André Racz moved to the United States in 1939 and joined the Atelier 17 printmaking studio in New York. He eventually spent over thirty years teaching at Columbia University, where he influenced a new generation of American printmakers. His interest in the physical properties of the printing plate led him to develop a style that favoured direct expression over decorative finishes.

Biography

His artistic approach is defined by a heavy, energetic line. In works such as the Perseus Beheading Medusa series, he captures motion through sharp angles and dense cross-hatching. He frequently explored themes from the Old Testament and Greek mythology, including Orpheus and Nahum. These subjects allowed him to experiment with the human form in states of extreme emotion or physical strain.

Modern collectors are drawn to the graphic clarity of his work. The stark black and white tones of his prints offer a bold aesthetic that suits contemporary living spaces. His translation of ancient stories into a modern visual language provides a clear alternative to purely abstract art. These prints provide visual weight through their focus on classic narratives and rigorous technical skill.
