Andries Jacobsz Stock

Andries Jacobsz Stock operated within the commercial print market of The Hague during the early seventeenth century. While many engravers of the Spanish Netherlands remained in Antwerp, Stock moved north to join the Guild of St. Luke in 1614. His technical skill in engraving copper plates shared similarities with the work of brass casters, who produced detailed lettering and designs on metal during the same period. He became a primary collaborator for the publisher Hendrik Hondius, producing a series of portraits of famous painters including Hans Holbein the Younger and Albrecht Dürer.

Biography

Stock used a precise engraving technique to translate paintings into black-and-white compositions. His work on "The Fortune-Teller" and "Adoration of the Shepherds" demonstrates a command of tonal contrast. He often collaborated with painters like Pieter Snayers to reproduce large-scale scenes on a smaller scale. His engravings maintain the clarity of the original subjects through controlled line work. This method allowed him to capture the textures of clothing and the physical features of his sitters without the use of colour.

Modern collectors value these prints for their historical accuracy and technical skill. The works offer a direct connection to the aesthetic preferences of the Dutch Golden Age. Pieces like "Eva Fliegen" or the portrait of Albrecht Dürer function as windows into the seventeenth-century interest in celebrity and documentation. These monochrome prints provide a graphic quality that suits contemporary interior spaces. They offer a sense of historical weight through their subject matter and traditional production methods.
