Anthonie Blocklandt van Montfoort

Anthonie Blocklandt van Montfoort was born into a noble family, which was a rare background for a sixteenth-century painter. His social status allowed him to travel to Rome in 1572, where he encountered the late Renaissance masters. Unlike many of his contemporaries who focused on local traditions, Blocklandt used his connections to bridge the gap between Northern European craft and Italian style. He eventually settled in Utrecht, where he became a mentor to the next generation of Dutch artists.

Biography

His work is defined by the elongated figures and complex poses of Northern Mannerism. Blocklandt moved away from the literal realism of the early Netherlandish school, preferring the grace and artifice found in the works of Parmigianino. In 'The Adoration of the Shepherds', he uses dramatic lighting and a muted palette of colour to create a sense of movement. His figures possess a sculptural quality, with muscular forms that reflect his study of classical antiquity and the works of Frans Floris.

Modern collectors value Blocklandt for his role in the transition toward the Dutch Golden Age. His prints and paintings offer a sophisticated alternative to more common pastoral scenes. The intellectual nature of his compositions makes them effective additions to a study or a formal living room. Because his career ended in 1583, his surviving designs represent a specific moment in art history when Northern European artists first began to master the complexities of Italian figure drawing.
