When Kuindzhi exhibited Moonlit Night on the Dnieper in 1880[1], visitors queued on Nevsky Prospekt whispering that the canvas must be lit from behind by a hidden lamp. The silver-green sheen on the river was that convincing. Ilya Repin was less mystified but no less struck, declaring that "the illusion of light was his God" and that no other painter had achieved the "miraculous success of his paintings".

Biography
Kuindzhi's early life gave no indication of what was coming. Born in 1842[1] in Mariupol to a Crimean Greek family, he was orphaned at six and spent his childhood grazing animals and working for a corn merchant. A period in Feodosia, mixing paints for Ivan Aivazovsky with no real instruction in return, was followed by years of self-teaching and work as a photographic retoucher in Taganrog. He reached the St Petersburg Academy of Arts in 1868[1], joined the Peredvizhniki, and produced early landscapes with the flat, sombre tones the movement favoured: The Forgotten Village, The Pack-Ox Road in Mariupol.
Around 1878[1]-79, something shifted. He began applying paint in concentrated, quasi-artificial patches of colour, isolating areas of intense light against deep grounds in a way that owed nothing to plein-air convention. The Birch Grove (1879) and After the Rain (1879) were startling departures; Moonlit Night on the Dnieper was the culmination. The effect approached the luminism of the American Hudson River School, though Kuindzhi arrived at it independently and in a far darker key.
He exhibited little after 1882[1], devoting himself to teaching at the St Petersburg Academy from 1894 to 1897, until his dismissal for backing a student strike. He left his estate and collection to a society he founded for the encouragement of Russian artists.
