Bernardo Cavallino
Bernardo Cavallino operated almost exclusively within the private art market of seventeenth-century Naples. While many of his peers competed for massive altar commissions, he specialised in smaller cabinet paintings intended for the domestic galleries of the Neapolitan nobility. His career was cut short by the plague of 1656, an event that claimed many of the city's leading artists.

His artistic style represents a shift away from the harsh naturalism associated with earlier Caravaggisti. Cavallino developed a distinctive style characterised by elongated figures and a delicate handling of light. In paintings like Saint Catherine of Alexandria and Adoration of the Shepherds, he used theatrical lighting to create mood rather than mere drama. His figures often appear to be in a state of quiet contemplation or gentle movement.
