Bernhard Rode

Bernhard Rode was more than a painter in the Prussian court; he was an influential director of the Berlin Academy of Arts. He maintained a close friendship with Frederick the Great, who commissioned him for several large-scale projects. Unlike many of his peers, Rode possessed personal wealth and used it to support the local art scene. This financial independence allowed him to focus on subjects that interested him personally, such as early Christian motifs and moral philosophy.

Biography

His artistic approach combined the light touch of the Rococo period with the emerging structure of Neoclassicism. Rode concentrated on allegorical etchings, creating visual representations of abstract concepts like Allegorie van de kuisheid or Allegorie van de overwinning. He used classical figures and symbolic objects to communicate specific ideas about human nature. His compositions are orderly and balanced, avoiding the excessive ornamentation common in earlier 18th-century art.

Today, collectors value these prints for their graphic precision and intellectual depth. Works like Allegorie van de kunsten or Barmhartige Samaritaan provide a sense of historical weight without feeling dated. Because these etchings do not rely on bold colour, they integrate easily into various interior schemes. These pieces offer a way to bring classical themes into a home through a refined, academic lens.
