Boardman Robinson

Boardman Robinson spent 1915 travelling through the Eastern Front of the Great War. Alongside journalist John Reed, he documented the conflict in Eastern Europe and Russia. The pair faced arrest as spies in several countries. These experiences shaped his direct approach to drawing. He avoided the sentimentality common in early twentieth-century illustration. His sketches from this period, such as Serbian Beggar, show a stark honesty.

Biography

Robinson rejected the fine cross-hatching techniques of his nineteenth-century predecessors. He preferred the broad strokes of a lithographic crayon. This choice gave his figures a heavy, physical presence. His portraits, including those of Walt Whitman and President Charles W. Eliot, possess a monumental quality. He taught at the Art Students League and later the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Centre. His style influenced a generation of American muralists. Works like Third Avenue capture the urban environment with thick, expressive lines.

Collectors value these prints for their graphic strength. The compositions are clear and lack unnecessary ornamentation. His depictions of daily life and historical figures provide a sense of historical weight. Pieces such as Checkmate, Gentlemen or The Sermon on the Mount fit well in modern rooms. They offer a balance of classical draughtsmanship and modern sensibility. The work remains relevant for its focus on human character and structural form.
