Canaletto

His name means little Canal. He was born Giovanni Antonio Canal in Venice in 1697, the son of the painter Bernardo Canal. He began as a theatrical scene painter, travelling to Rome with his father and brother to paint opera scenery for Alessandro Scarlatti. He returned to Venice around 1719 and switched to topographical views.

Biography

His principal patron was Joseph Smith, an English merchant living in Venice who later became British Consul. Smith acquired nearly fifty paintings, a hundred and fifty drawings, and fifteen etchings from Canaletto. The collection was eventually sold to King George III in 1762.

He used a camera obscura as a drawing aid. A surviving sketchbook from the 1730s contains 120 pages of camera obscura drawings of Venetian buildings. But he did not trace mechanically: he routinely altered compositions from what the device showed him, adjusting angles, compressing distances, and moving buildings to improve the view.

In 1746 he moved to London, staying until 1756 with brief returns to Venice. His English work was competent but became repetitive. The critic George Vertue publicly suggested that the man working in London under the name Canaletto might be an impostor. The rumour may have been circulated by dealers who had been selling copies. Canaletto responded by placing advertisements in the Daily Advertiser inviting the public to his studio to watch him paint, proving his identity by demonstration.
