Charles Marion Russell

Charles Marion Russell arrived in Montana as a teenager to work on a sheep ranch. He soon moved to cattle ranching and spent eleven years as a night herder. During these years, he carried watercolours and clay in his pockets. He documented the daily life of the frontier while it was still active. His 1897 oil painting, Approach of White Men, captures a specific moment of cultural contact. This first-hand experience distinguishes his work from artists who only visited the West as tourists.

Biography

Russell used several media including oil and watercolour. His 1898 work Preparation for the Buffalo Hunt shows his ability to handle complex group scenes. He often focused on the perspectives of Native Americans and the realities of ranch work. His style avoids the theatrical poses found in some Western art. He preferred naturalistic depictions of horses and figures. His watercolours like Indian Scout show a clear understanding of light and anatomy.

Collectors today value Russell for his historical accuracy and technical skill. His paintings are visual records of the American West before the closing of the frontier. The market for his work remains strong, with major pieces reaching seven-figure sums at auction. His art provides a sense of space and history for modern interiors. These prints allow homeowners to bring the atmosphere of the Montana plains into a contemporary setting.
