Chŏng Yusŭng

Chŏng Yusŭng was a master of the woodblock medium who depicted the mundane tools of rural Korean life. While many of his contemporaries turned to abstract expressionism, Chŏng focused on the physical textures of wood and ink. He carved his blocks with a directness that preserved the raw grain of the timber. This choice allowed the material itself to participate in the final image. He was known to select specific wood types to ensure the natural patterns complemented his subjects.

Biography

His work features bold lines and a limited colour palette. He used traditional ink wash techniques alongside modern printmaking to create scenes of village markets and mountain peaks. Chŏng avoided the decorative excesses of earlier court painting. He preferred a sparse aesthetic that emphasised the weight of his subjects. His compositions rely on strong silhouettes and negative space. This approach stripped away unnecessary detail to find the essence of a form.

Modern collectors value Chŏng Yusŭng for his ability to translate Korean motifs into a minimalist visual language. His prints provide a sense of calm. The graphic quality of his woodblock prints fits well in contemporary interiors that prioritise clean lines and natural materials. These works offer a connection to a specific history without appearing dated or sentimental. They remain popular for their balance of heritage and modern design.
