Christoffel Jegher
Christoffel Jegher was a specialist in woodcut during an era when copper engraving was the dominant medium for reproducing paintings. While most printmakers sought the fine detail of metal plates, Jegher worked almost exclusively in wood. He became a member of the Guild of Saint Luke in Antwerp in 1628. His collaboration with Peter Paul Rubens was unique because Rubens granted him a monopoly on woodcut reproductions of his designs.
Biography
Jegher developed a technique that translated the fluid brushstrokes of the Baroque movement into the rigid medium of wood. He used broad, sweeping lines and heavy hatching to create a sense of volume. In works like Hercules Slaying Discord or the portrait of Doge Giovanni Cornaro, he captured the muscularity and movement typical of Flemish art. He often cut his blocks so that the white space functioned as a light source.
Collectors today value Jegher for the graphic clarity of his prints. His woodcuts possess a bold, monochromatic quality that works well in contemporary interiors. The large scale and expressive linework of works such as Coronation of the Virgin provide a strong visual presence. His prints offer a direct connection to the studio of Rubens through a medium that feels more tactile than traditional engraving.
