Christoph Weigel the Elder
Christoph Weigel the Elder operated a prolific publishing house in Nuremberg during the late seventeenth century. While many of his contemporaries focused on religious commissions, Weigel became a primary documentarian of the European workforce. He managed a large workshop where he collaborated with his brother to produce thousands of plates. His artistic approach centred on the Ständebuch, or book of trades, which recorded the specific tools and environments of various professions. In works such as Plaatdrukker (The Copperplate Printer) and Der Schreiber (The Scribe), he provided a factual look at the mechanics of his own industry. His engravings are characterised by clear lines and a focus on material culture. He often included satirical elements, as seen in Bücher-Narr (The Book Fool), which mocked those who collected books for status rather than knowledge.
Modern collectors value these prints for their historical accuracy and their celebration of specific crafts. The depictions of scholars and printers resonate with contemporary interests in traditional skills and the history of the written word.
