When Constantin Flondor co-founded the Sigma group in Timișoara in 1969, Romania was in the middle of a brief cultural opening that would not last. Sigma's systematic investigation of visual perception, geometry, and natural form occupied a position somewhere between Op Art and conceptual research, producing work that looked genuinely unlike the official socialist realist output surrounding it.

Biography
Flondor was born in 1936[1] in Cernăuți, a city then in northern Romania (now Chernivtsi, Ukraine), and studied painting at the Institute of Visual Arts "Nicolae Grigorescu" in Bucharest from 1954 to 1960. Before Sigma, he was a founding member of the group 1+1+1 (1966-1969[1]), an earlier collaborative experiment in perceptual and systematic work.
His practice centres on the close observation of natural phenomena translated through geometry. The Solarograms he developed in 1976 are among his most distinctive contributions: photographic records of the sun's path across the sky, rendered with a rigour that makes the natural appear almost mathematical. Works such as "Plane Trees," "The Marvelous Seed," and "Stubble Field" apply similar attention to botanical and agricultural subjects, finding pattern and structure in organic form.
Flondor has taught at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Timișoara since 1991 and has been an invited professor at the Sommermalakademie in Beratzhausen, Germany. He received the Romanian[1] Academy award for painting in 2006.
