Eadweard Muybridge

Eadweard Muybridge's pioneering work in photography began somewhat unexpectedly, when Leland Stanford sought his help to settle a bet. Stanford, a horse breeder, wagered that all four hooves of a galloping horse were simultaneously off the ground at some point in its stride. Muybridge's sequential photographs, such as *Horse Galloping*, proved Stanford correct and launched Muybridge into motion studies.

Biography

Muybridge dedicated himself to capturing motion too swift for the naked eye, culminating in multiple-camera studies at the University of Pennsylvania in 1885. These experiments recorded progressive moments of single actions, and he published his findings in *Animal Locomotion* (1887). His work influenced artists like Edgar Degas and Marcel Duchamp. Muybridge also invented the zoopraxiscope, a device that projected his images, creating the illusion of movement so realistic that viewers felt as though they were watching living animals.

Today, Muybridge's photographs appeal to collectors interested in the intersection of art and science. His images possess a timeless quality, documenting moments in time with scientific precision and artistic vision. His influence on the development of cinema makes his work a fascinating piece of both art and technological history.
