Erhard Reuwich
Erhard Reuwich was an artist and printer from Utrecht. He is known for his work on the 1486 publication of Bernhard von Breydenbach's travelogue. Reuwich accompanied Breydenbach on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 1483 and 1484 to record the sites and peoples encountered during the journey.
Biography
His woodcut illustrations include views of harbours, figures in native costume, and various animals. Some of these animal illustrations were based on bestiaries, depicting creatures that Reuwich had not seen himself. We offer fine art prints of his work, including his frontispiece and depictions of Saracens, the Holy Sepulchre, and Turks on horseback.
