Félix Buhot
Félix Buhot was known for his habit of adding "symphonic margins" to his etchings. These were small, spontaneous sketches etched into the borders of the main plate. He famously produced The Funeral of the Burin to mark the decline of traditional engraving in favour of more expressive etching. This practice made each print unique. It gave viewers a glimpse into his creative process. He was an early adopter of Japonisme in France. He collected Japanese objects such as the porcelain tea containers and ivory medicine cases featured in his work.
Biography
Buhot used a combination of etching and drypoint alongside aquatint to create specific atmospheric effects. He was interested in the weather. Many of his works, such as A Quay in Paris: Winter Morning, capture the dampness of rain or the haze of fog. He experimented with different inks and papers to achieve these results. He often printed on old ledgers or thin Japanese papers to vary the texture of the final image. His technique was highly experimental for the period.
His prints appeal to modern collectors because they document 19th-century city life with a sense of movement. The marginalia provide a narrative layer that is rare in traditional printmaking. These works offer a balance between technical skill and informal observation. They fit well in modern interiors that value detail and historical context. The small scale of his work makes it suitable for intimate gallery walls in a home.
