  1. 1418At about 23, received payments for painting at the church of Santo Stefano del Ponte in Florence, the earliest documented record of his professional work.
  2. 1423At about 28, formally joined the Dominican convent of San Domenico in Fiesole, taking the name Fra Giovanni.
  3. 1433At about 38, completed the Linaiuoli Altarpiece in Florence, commissioned by the linen-weavers' guild, his largest panel painting.
  4. 1438At about 43, began the fresco cycle at the convent of San Marco in Florence, painting nearly fifty contemplative scenes across the cloister, chapter house and monks' cells.
  5. 1447At about 52, travelled to Rome to fresco the private chapel of Pope Nicholas V in the Vatican with scenes from the lives of Saints Stephen and Lawrence.
  6. 1450At about 55, served as prior of San Domenico in Fiesole, balancing monastic leadership with continued painting.
  7. 1455Died aged about 60 in Rome and was buried in the church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1982.
