- 1418At about 23, received payments for painting at the church of Santo Stefano del Ponte in Florence, the earliest documented record of his professional work.
- 1423At about 28, formally joined the Dominican convent of San Domenico in Fiesole, taking the name Fra Giovanni.
- 1433At about 38, completed the Linaiuoli Altarpiece in Florence, commissioned by the linen-weavers' guild, his largest panel painting.
- 1438At about 43, began the fresco cycle at the convent of San Marco in Florence, painting nearly fifty contemplative scenes across the cloister, chapter house and monks' cells.
- 1447At about 52, travelled to Rome to fresco the private chapel of Pope Nicholas V in the Vatican with scenes from the lives of Saints Stephen and Lawrence.
- 1450At about 55, served as prior of San Domenico in Fiesole, balancing monastic leadership with continued painting.
- 1455Died aged about 60 in Rome and was buried in the church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1982.
