Gaspard Dughet

Gaspard Dughet was a French painter who never set foot in France. Born in Rome to a French father and Italian mother, he spent his entire life in Italy. He became the brother-in-law of Nicolas Poussin after the older artist married his sister in 1630. Dughet eventually adopted the name Gaspard Poussin to honour his mentor. Despite this close family connection, he departed from the rigid, stoic compositions of his teacher to explore a more spontaneous view of the Roman countryside.

Biography

His work focuses on the wilder aspects of nature. He preferred depicting the Roman Campagna with a sense of atmospheric tension in his landscape paintings. While Poussin sought order, Dughet captured looming storms and brooding skies. He often painted small figures against vast, untamed environments, such as in his depiction of Saint Augustine on the beach at Ostia. This approach created a feeling of anticipation and mystery. He drew inspiration from the works of northern artists like Paul Bril and Adam Elsheimer to develop his specific style of Italianate scenery.

Modern collectors value Dughet for his contribution to the picturesque aesthetic. His compositions influenced the design of many English country gardens during the eighteenth century. These prints offer a balance between classical structure and the raw energy of the natural world. They provide a window into the seventeenth-century Roman wilderness that feels both historic and immediate. His ability to render light and weather makes these works suitable for rooms that require a sense of space and movement.
