Giovanni Baglione
Giovanni Baglione was a Roman artist active during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. He began his career working for the Santacroce family and later received commissions from Sixtus V and Clement VIII for decorative projects at the Vatican and the Lateran. His early work followed a Mannerist style, influenced by painters such as Giovanni Guerra and Cesare Nebbia.
Biography
After 1600, Baglione adopted a Caravaggesque manner for a brief period, producing works such as the Ecstasy of Saint Francis. He later completed projects for Saint Peter's, the Cappella Paolina, and the Gonzaga court at Mantua. Baglione served as Principe of the Accademia di San Luca and authored books on Roman churches and the lives of artists. He died in Rome in 1643.
