Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione
Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, nicknamed Il Grechetto, was a peripatetic Italian artist; he moved between Genoa, Rome, Florence, Venice, and Mantua throughout his career. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Castiglione was fascinated by printmaking, and he became a highly skilled etcher, even inventing the monotype, a printing technique that produces a single, unique image.
