Overbeck designed pottery propped up in bed. Chronic neuritis had left her with painful nerve inflammation, loss of reflexes and muscle atrophy so severe that she was almost completely incapacitated. She continued working anyway, drawing with her equipment arranged around her on the bedcovers, producing the designs that made the Overbeck Pottery studio one of the most distinctive operations of the American Arts and Crafts movement.

Biography
She was born in 1870 in Cambridge City, Indiana, one of seven children. Her mother discouraged marriage, believing it would limit her daughters' creative potential; Hannah, along with four of her sisters, chose not to marry. She studied photography with her older sister Ida, then attended Indiana State Normal School, graduating in 1894. A year of teaching in Clinton, Indiana, ended when illness forced her home.
In 1911, four of the Overbeck sisters founded the Overbeck Pottery studio in their Cambridge City home. Hannah was the chief designer, creating patterns based on the flowers and plants in the family's gardens. Her designs were incised into hand-formed pottery made without a potter's wheel, featuring bold colours and clean, uncluttered lines drawn from nature. From 1904 to 1916 she also contributed designs to Keramic Studio magazine.
Her work with her sister Mary Frances produced pieces that combined Arts and Crafts restraint with a decorative warmth particular to their Indiana setting. The pottery gained regional recognition and participated in national exhibitions. Hannah died in 1931, at sixty-one. The studio continued under the surviving sisters, with the last Overbeck sister dying in 1955.
