Henri Harpignies
Henri Harpignies did not begin his professional training until he was 27 years old. Before this, he worked as a travelling salesman for his family business. He eventually became a master of the watercolour medium, using it to capture the physical structure of trees with great precision. While his peers chased fleeting light, Harpignies looked for the permanent form of the trees. He lived a very long life, witnessing the shift from Romanticism to the early 20th century.

He is often grouped with the Barbizon School and spent much of his time painting in the Allier region. His style relies on a silver-grey colour palette and a strong sense of line.
