Hosoda Eishi
Hosoda Eishi was born in 1756 into a high-ranking samurai family. He served the shogun Tokugawa Ieharu and held a position in the palace. He studied painting under Kano Eisen-in Michinobu before turning to print design. In 1789, he retired from his official duties to become a professional illustrator of ukiyo-e.
Biography
Eishi specialised in the portrayal of bijin. His compositions often alluded to classical themes, including the Tale of Genji. He designed sets of prints known as mitate-e, which set classical subjects in the contemporary period. Solis Prints offers a range of his works, including Courtesan and Attendant, Geisha Preparing for an Entertainment, Karakoto of Chojiya on Parade, Matching Shells (Kai-awase), “Kisen Hōshi”, and Ono no Komachi: Number Two.
