Jacob Toorenvliet
Jacob Toorenvliet spent over twenty years travelling across Europe, a choice that set him apart from many of his Leiden contemporaries. He lived in Rome for several years, where he joined the Bentvueghels, a society for Dutch and Flemish artists. His peers gave him the nickname Jason. He also worked in Venice and Vienna before eventually returning to the Dutch Republic. These years abroad introduced him to Italian compositions and a variety of social subjects that he brought back to his home studio.
Biography
Toorenvliet is a member of the Leiden Fijnschilders, a group of painters known for a polished and smooth technique. He often worked on a small scale, sometimes using copper plates to create a surface with a glass-like finish. His series on the Five Senses, including De smaak and Het gehoor, demonstrates his interest in human expression and physical interaction. He focused on clear depictions of figures in conversation or engaged in daily tasks. His portrait of Theodorus Craanen shows his ability to record specific facial details and the texture of clothing with accuracy.
His paintings provide a balance between technical skill and domestic observation. The small dimensions of his work make these pieces appropriate for modern living spaces.
