Jacopo da Sellaio

Jacopo da Sellaio

  • Florentine School

Jacopo da Sellaio managed a productive workshop in Florence alongside his partner Filippo di Giuliano. While many Renaissance artists focused on large church commissions, Sellaio became a specialist in domestic art. He was a prolific creator of cassone panels, which were painted chests given as wedding gifts. These panels brought classical mythology and religious devotion into the private spaces of Florentine homes.

Biography

His style shows a clear connection to the linear grace of Sandro Botticelli and the soft modelling of Fra Filippo Lippi. Sellaio often placed his figures against vast, pale skies and rocky outcrops. In works like Virgin Adoring the Child, he uses a delicate touch to render transparent veils and gold-leaf details. His compositions are balanced and calm. He preferred clear outlines and a cool palette that suited the interior lighting of fifteenth-century villas.

Collectors today value Sellaio for his ability to blend mythological themes with religious subjects. His painting of Minerva demonstrates how Renaissance artists integrated ancient wisdom into their visual vocabulary. The smaller scale of his work makes it suitable for contemporary living spaces. These prints offer a direct link to the domestic aesthetic of the Florentine Renaissance.
