Jakob Smits

Jakob Smits abandoned a successful career in Amsterdam and Brussels to settle in the remote Kempen region of Belgium. He moved to a small thatched cottage in Achterbos in 1888. This move was a permanent rejection of urban art circles. He lived among the peasants he painted and often shared their difficult conditions. This isolation allowed him to develop a style independent of the prevailing Impressionist trends. He eventually became a naturalised Belgian citizen in 1902.

Biography

His technique relied on a heavy application of paint. Smits frequently used a palette knife to build up thick layers on the canvas. He often mixed his oil paints with sand to create a rough surface. In works such as Interieur met aardappelschillende vrouw or Boerderij in de Kempen, he used light to define form rather than colour. His drawings, including Studieblad met schetsen van kippen en een konijn, demonstrate a focus on stark lines and immediate observation.

Modern collectors value the honesty in these depictions of rural life. The work avoids the sentimentality found in many nineteenth-century pastoral scenes. His focus on domestic tasks and simple architecture provides a sense of stillness. The physical presence of his paintings translates well into high-quality prints. These images offer a connection to a slower pace of life through technical experimentation and a unique approach to light.
