Jan Davidsz. de Heem

Jan Davidsz. de Heem (1606–1684) began his artistic career in the Dutch Republic before relocating to Antwerp. This move proved significant as he shifted from the restrained traditions of the Haarlem school toward a more ambitious, Flemish style. He became a master of the pronk still life, a genre characterised by the display of expensive, imported goods and exotic items from across the globe.

Biography

His approach involved a high degree of technical control over the representation of textures and light. He arranged objects at varying heights to build a sense of theatricality, often including items that showed subtle signs of decay or wear. Snails crawling on leaves or fruit with burst skins appear alongside polished silver and glass. This juxtaposition of beauty and transience creates a calculated tension within his compositions.

Modern collectors appreciate these works for their precise observation and balanced arrangements. The print of Stilleven met bloemen in een glazen vaas demonstrates his ability to handle light and form. His focus on the material qualities of flowers and glass provides a decorative quality that remains relevant for contemporary domestic spaces.
