Jean-Robert Ango
Jean-Robert Ango remains an enigmatic figure in eighteenth-century art. He died at only twenty-three years old, leaving behind a body of work that scholars frequently confused with that of Jean-Honore Fragonard. Living in Rome during the 1760s, he supported himself by creating red chalk copies of Renaissance masterpieces and contemporary Roman scenes. Unlike many of his peers, he never became a member of the Academie Royale. His drawings circulated widely among elite collectors of the period despite his lack of official status.
Biography
His technique relied heavily on sanguine, a red earth chalk that allowed for soft transitions and bold outlines. Ango often worked directly in the Musei Capitolini, as seen in his work Artist Sketching in the Musei Capitolini, Rome. He captured the scale of ancient sculptures and the movements of other artists at work. His drawings possess a sketch-like immediacy that prioritises the energy of the line over precise anatomical detail. This approach gives his religious and mythological scenes a sense of motion and spontaneity.
