Johann Michael Rottmayr
Johann Michael Rottmayr was an Austrian artist born in 1656 and died in 1730. He received training from his mother and later worked in Venice from 1675 to 1688 in the workshop of Johann Carl Loth. After moving to Salzburg in 1689, he produced mythological ceiling frescos and panel paintings. He eventually settled in Vienna, where he secured commissions throughout Austria and southern Germany.

Biography
In his fresco painting, he moved away from the illusionist manner of presenting architecture. He developed his own devices in the field of colour and figure composition. His work at Vranov castle in 1696 demonstrated this approach. He prepared the way for a new form of monumental painting by closing up ceiling space and introducing a coloration that foreshadowed the Rococo. Notable examples of his ceiling frescos include those at the castle at Pommerstelden, the church of Melk monastery, and the Karlskirche in Vienna.
