Joseph Franck

Joseph Franck, often identified as the enigmatic Master Francke, was likely a Dominican friar rather than a traditional guild painter. Known as Frater Franco of Zutphen, he arrived in Hamburg and immediately made the previous local style appear archaic. He operated without a formal workshop or apprentices. This independence allowed him to produce works with a specific spiritual focus that differed from his contemporaries.

Biography

His work is defined by a sharp contrast between serene beauty and physical suffering, characteristic of the International Style. In the Englandfahrer Altarpiece, he used deep red skies filled with gold stars and omitted traditional figures such as Saint Joseph to focus on the Virgin. Conversely, his Passion paintings are blunt. He depicted Christ literally climbing out of a stone tomb, pushing against the edges with visible effort. This directness replaced the floating, supernatural figures common in earlier Gothic art.

Modern collectors are often drawn to the graphic quality of his compositions. He used flat colour areas and strong silhouettes that feel contemporary. The emotional range of his panels, from the quietude of a starlit night to the heavy drama of the cross, provides a striking visual experience. These works document the shift from medieval symbolism toward a more human realism.
