Manuel Salvador Carmona

Manuel Salvador Carmona spent six years in Paris training under Nicolas-Gabriel Dupuis. This French influence shaped his career more than his Spanish origins. He eventually married Anna Maria Mengs, the daughter of the court painter Anton Raphael Mengs. This connection placed him at the centre of the Neo-classical movement in Madrid.

Biography

His technique relied on the burin rather than the more common etching needle. This tool allowed for sharp, defined lines that gave his portraits a sculptural quality. He produced many plates for the Royal Academy of San Fernando. His work captures the formal dress and rigid posture of the Bourbon court with accuracy.

These prints appeal to those who appreciate technical skill. The black-and-white tones provide a neutral element for home decor. His engravings of Spanish royalty and religious figures offer a connection to the Enlightenment. They remain popular for their balance and formal composition.
