Master of the First Prayerbook of Maximilian

The Master of the First Prayerbook of Maximilian was an anonymous Flemish illuminator who worked for the Habsburg court. While later projects for the Emperor involved famous German draughtsmen like Albrecht Dürer, this artist established the visual language of Maximilian's private devotion. He is widely believed to be Alexander Bening. His work appears in the most prestigious manuscripts of the era, such as the Grimani Breviary.

Biography

His approach defined the Ghent-Bruges style through the use of trompe l'oeil borders. These margins contain realistic depictions of flowers and insects that appear to cast shadows on the page. He used symbolic emblems, such as the cornucopia or palm branches, to represent specific virtues. He avoided flat backgrounds in favour of deep spatial views. His figures possess a soft quality created through delicate stippling and layers of thin colour.

These works appeal to modern collectors because of their observational accuracy. The inclusion of natural elements alongside religious scenes creates a secular interest in the physical world. The small scale of these illuminations makes them effective for personal display in modern interiors. They represent a period when book production was the highest form of luxury art.
