Michelangelo Buonarroti was shaped by two conflicting forces in Florence. He lived in the Medici household, then the intellectual centre of Europe, but also attended the austere sermons of Savonarola. This tension appeared in his early output. When he carved the Pietà in Rome, he chose a two-figure composition. This arrangement was common in the Rhineland but nearly unknown in Italy. He adopted foreign structures while working under local patronage.
Biography
His technical training began with painting under Ghirlandaio. He later moved to the Medici Gardens to study sculpture with Bertoldo, a pupil of Donatello. Michelangelo often left projects unfinished. For a commission of the Twelve Apostles, he only completed a sketch of St. Matthew. His work is defined by the human form in motion. Pieces like The Battle of the Centaurs show his interest in massed figures and physical strain. He treated the stone block as a container for a figure already present within the material.
Modern collectors value his work for its clarity. His drawings and paintings, such as the Holy Family created for Angelo Doni, possess a sculptural quality. These images translate well to prints because they rely on strong lines and clear definitions of form. His studies of the male torso and the proportions of the David remain standard references for classical beauty. His art provides a sense of physical weight and balance to a space.
