Paul Poiret
Poiret claimed to have freed women from the corset. "Yes, I freed the bust," he admitted, "but I shackled the legs." The hobble skirt, which restricted movement to small steps, was his invention. He was fashion's first modern personality: contradictory, self-promoting, and more influential than anyone who came after him until Chanel.
Biography
He was born in Paris in 1879, the son of a cloth merchant. He began by selling fashion sketches; the couturiere Madeleine Cheruit bought twelve of his designs in 1898. After working for Jacques Doucet and then at Worth, he opened his own house in 1903. His technique of draping fabric rather than tailoring it represented a break with nineteenth-century construction that established the paradigm of modern fashion.
He was the first couturier to launch a perfume line (Rosine, named after his daughter), the first to align fashion with interior design (the Ecole Martine, which trained working-class girls in decorative arts), and the first to commission what are now considered the earliest modern fashion photographs, shot by Edward Steichen in 1911. He assembled a collection of early Cubist paintings; Picasso showed Les Demoiselles d'Avignon for the first time at Poiret's premises.
The 1920s destroyed him. Chanel's simple jersey dresses made his elaborate orientalism look old-fashioned. He sold his art collection in 1925, closed the fashion house in 1929, and spent his remaining years in poverty. He died in Paris in 1944.
