Biography

Born in Passaic, New Jersey, in 1938, Smithson initially painted and created collages. His early work explored abstract expressionism and pop art influences. By the mid-1960s, he moved towards Minimalism, producing sculptures with industrial materials like steel and mirrors. This period saw him questioning conventional gallery spaces and the commercial art system.

His interests soon turned to geology, entropy, and non-site specific art. Smithson began creating earthworks, using natural elements as his medium. His most recognised piece, *Spiral Jetty* (1970), is a colossal coil of basalt rock, earth, and salt crystals extending into the Great Salt Lake in Utah. This work interacts with its surroundings, changing with water levels and erosion.

Smithson also wrote extensively, publishing essays that explored his ideas on art, nature, and the concept of non-sites, which were collections of materials from a specific location brought into a gallery. His theoretical texts were as significant as his physical works, helping to define the intellectual framework for Land Art. His sudden death left many projects unfinished, but his body of work continues to be studied.
