Seth Eastman
Seth Eastman was a career soldier before he was a professional artist. He graduated from West Point in 1829 and spent much of his military life stationed at remote posts. He married a Dakota woman named Wakanajinwin, the daughter of a chief. This connection provided him with personal access to the community he painted.
