






Sir Godfrey Kneller
Sir Godfrey Kneller was born in Lübeck, Germany, in 1646. He studied mathematics at the University of Leiden in 1662. His artistic training occurred in Amsterdam under Ferdinand Bol and Rembrandt. In 1672, he travelled to Rome and Venice before returning to Germany in 1675.
Biography
Kneller arrived in London in 1676 and became court painter to Charles II. He travelled to Paris in 1684 to paint Louis XIV. James II appointed him principal painter of the British court in 1688. William III knighted him in 1692, and he received an honorary doctorate of law from the University of Oxford in 1695.
